Relaxation of lockdown has hardly changed life for our members. Most are unable to get to the shops through lack of own transport. They are unable to stand in queues and mainly lack confidence. The only transport available to them to attend medical appointments for now is the taxi as distancing rules prevent them to share volunteers' cars. We are most grateful to the Co-op staff for their understanding and assistance in making up orders.
We are keeping in touch regularly with our members via phone calls to prevent loneliness. They continue to be provided with fish and chips every 2 weeks to make up for the absence of regular meetings. Thank you to Ryan at Market Hill Fisheries for his continued support. It will be some time before we can even contemplate restarting our activities and sadly our Make A Difference Day planned for Saturday 24th October will not go ahead. Items previously advertised (large ironing board and a child high chair) are still available. If anyone is interested in making a donation to the Club for them please get in touch by ringing 733441. All members have been saddened by the passing away of Marion Caley, a much esteemed lady at the Disabled Club. This wasn't unexpected but still very upsetting having known Marion personally for the best part of 30 years. She came to the Club as a volunteer many years ago while assisting another Club member. She was helping on outings and with refreshments. She also joined the Kurling group and became the group representative on the Club Board of Trustees. Sadly with the Covid-19 restrictions we have not been able to say good bye in the way we would have liked. We are most grateful to Mr & Mrs Jones for their very generous donation. Their continued support is indeed very much appreciated. Nicki Mumby Chair We celebrated the Club's 29th Birthday on 7th July. As promised NOTHING stopped us marking the occasion. Thank you so much to Cindy Joyce who as usual produced such a splendid amount of food for our Lockdown Birthday Party.
Food (and trifles especially) was very well received by all. I have had highly complimentary feedback. Despite being unable to be together for the occasion, members have very much appreciated the efforts being made to celebrate our 29th Birthday. Obviously they are looking forward to better celebrations next year! We are still keeping in touch regularly with our members via phone calls to prevent loneliness and they are still provided with fish and chips every 2 weeks to make up for the absence of regular meetings. Thank you to Ryan at Market Hill Fisheries for his continued support. It will be some time before we can even contemplate restarting our activities. Obviously with distancing it will be more tricky than ever and we may not be able to have everybody there at the same time. Activities will also be limited with people not able to share equipment. We may need to ask for people to bring own mug for refreshments, own pen, own dice, etc. Collecting money will also need to be done differently. Transport is going to be the biggest nightmare as 2 at most in taxi, so double the amount of cost and double the time involved. It is doubtful that we could have wheelchair users or anybody who need support for walking because of distancing. The Co-op staff ensures that our orders are dealt with promptly. We will continue putting orders in for as long as necessary. Assisted shopping and other trips are certainly a long way away. To add to transport uncertainty we have received formal notice from Age UK telling us that they had made the decision to end their MinibusTransport Service with immediate effect. We have a duty of care to our members and volunteers and we will only restart activities when WE believe that it will be safe to do so. It is unlikely that we will be able to hold our Make A Difference Day on Saturday 24th October. However we have received items to put on our stall. If anyone is interested in making a donation to the Club for a large ironing board and a child high chair please get in touch by ringing 733441. Nicki Mumby Chair We are still keeping in touch regularly with our members via phone calls to prevent loneliness during this enforced isolation and they are still provided with fish and chips every 2 weeks to make up for the absence of regular meetings.
The Coop staff continue to ensure that our orders are dealt with promptly. We will continue putting orders in for as long as necessary. It will be some time before we can safely and realistically restart meetings, assisted shopping and other trips. We should be celebrating the Club's 29th Birthday on 7th July. Sadly this year we are unable to be together to do this but NOTHING is going to stop us marking the occasion. Members will be sent plated party food instead and we will have a double celebration next year! Nicki Mumby Chair Our Charity Fair should have been held on Saturday 25th April 2020 but sadly had to be cancelled. Groups who had booked tables have been contacted and will gladly join us when we are able to set up another date for the Fair. I am well aware that this is a great loss for all who rely on such occasions to raise much needed funds and I will do my very best to organise an event as soon as life returns to normal.
In the meantime we have ensured that all our members are safe, that they have enough provisions and most importantly we are keeping in touch regularly via phone calls to prevent loneliness during this enforced isolation. Our members have been sent some "homework" in the shape of pictures to colour. It is the intention to have a small exhibition when we can resume our activities. Indeed, when this is all over we will have a jolly good knees up! Our AGM should be held on Tuesday 2nd June but will have to be postponed for the foreseeable future. It is also a fact that our financial year end accounts will not be ready to approve due to the Coronavirus restrictions which are preventing documents to be handed over to our financial examiner. We are obviously applying Charity Commission guidance by keeping strict record of decision made. We are most grateful to Ryan at Market Hill Fisheries who despite having to stop operating due to staff shortage is still sending us fish and chips once a week when he needs to fire his fryers. This is the highlight of the week for all our members. Thank you Ryan, you are a gent! The Coop staff have been absolutely brilliant too, ensuring that our orders are dealt with promptly and trying to fulfill them in the best possible manner. On the shopping front too I want to thank Carole Harrison (volunteer and Disabled Club committee member) who has been a star at getting supplies unavailable locally. She is a massive help. Our members are also Poirier Foundation members and both charities are working closely to ensure that life is as comfortable as possible for everyone on our lists. Nicki Mumby Chair The Club welcomes anyone with a physical disability living in Winterton or surrounding area. Club meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at the Methodist Church Hall, King Street. 2pm to 4pm. In September we will visit the Butchers Arms for a meal prior to a games afternoon/committee meeting and we will also welcome Helen from HPY Bags.
Our weekly New Age Kurling sessions are held on Wednesdays at Winterton Community Pavilion. 2pm to 4pm. Sessions are open to non Club members. The future of our transport is still incredibly precarious. For the last 6 years Age UK has been the only reliable source of accessible minibuses for us and the closure of the Lifestyle Centre in Scunthorpe is a complete nightmare. Some of our members have no other means of transport and rely entirely on us to get basic food provisions. Our members are getting increasingly anxious. Still no news either from Winterton Town Council after our request in April to revisit provision of local transport suitable for our members. Does anybody actually care about the well being of elderly disabled in this country? Our Make a Difference Day will be held on Saturday 26th October. 2pm to 4pm at Winterton Trinity Methodist Church Hall. As usual we are inviting other voluntary groups to the event. Stalls: £4 per table. Displays free of charge.Craft stalls: £5. Ring 733441 for further details of all our activities. Nicki Mumby Chair |
