Life at the Club has continued to be hectic and also sad when we had to say goodbye to Evelyn Clark who passed away only 10 weeks after Frank, her husband. Our thoughts are with Ann & Keith who lost Mum & Dad in such a short space of time and nevertheless still remembered us at the Club by making a £600 donation in their memory. Many thanks from us all.
The Club celebrated its 22nd Birthday on the 2nd July with great entertainment from John Lee & his guitar group and fabulous catering provided by Cindy Joyce. Everyone had a super time.
On the 31st July we were on the move again when we relocated our New Age Kurling sessions to the newly opened Winterton Community Pavilion in Newport Drive. Special thanks must go to Carole Harrison for the use of her van and to Mike & Steve Joyce for the “muscle power” carrying our unwieldy metal cupboard. Our members are now enjoying a brilliant playing facility and were going to give a demonstration on the official opening day. However, this is now postponed and could be a blessing in disguise as members will have more time to practice and getting adjusted to the proper game length as, so far, we have never had a room long enough to play at competition level. Our sessions are held every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and are open to everyone in North Lincs. We will be adjusting our sessions seasonally so our members will not have to drive home in the dark. From beginning of October to end of February, the sessions will be held still on Wednesdays but from 10am to 12 noon. The cost is £1 per session and includes refreshments. Come down and have a go, you never know you might just get hooked!
Our members are looking forward to going to Grimsby Auditorium in October to see “The Mousetrap” in its first ever UK tour celebrating its Diamond Anniversary. We have secured transport to get there. While we are on the subject of transport, the minibus has still not come back to Winterton. Councillor Waltham, can we believe in your promises? It would now appear that this minibus is only hired out 3 times a month. Is this good management? Is this good use of council taxpayer’s money? Is this best value for the people of North Lincs?
Once again, the Club will take part in Make a Difference Day on Saturday 26th October at the Methodist Church Hall from 2pm to 4pm. Stalls are available to voluntary groups at a cost of £4 per table (6ft). Further details from Nicki on 733441.
Members of the Club (in their 70s and 80s) have been supporting the SOS De Lacy House campaign and have attended meetings and joined demonstrations. They should be congratulated for turning up on a very cold windswept morning to demonstrate for the first time in their life and some, further attending the Planning meeting seeing the Council Chamber for the first time. Instead they have been labelled “lefties militants with political ambitions” just because they do not agree with proposals being made regarding De Lacy House and its future. Some have remarked that they have voted Tory all their life and that they will not even bother to vote at the next election after the incredible accusations made towards them. Quite a lot of them were born in Winterton or have lived in Winterton for a very long time. All our members want is to have access to care in their own locality. They want to remain near family and friends especially when they are in need of respite care and can look forward to visits from people of their own age who incidentally would not be able to travel some distance to visit through lack of transport/mobility. As for the members who are in need of day care they are extremely concerned at being treated like parcels carted around North Lincs for a bath. It should also be pointed out that their weekly bath is not always given to them despite the fact that undoubtedly, the Care Home would be claiming for delivering this service.
The age range of our members is between 46 and 99 years old. Surely they deserve to be listened to when their future care is being decided. Do we not live in a democratic country? The big question is: Is North Lincolnshire part of the United Kingdom?
